American R&B singer Chris Brown has been arrested in Manchester on charges related to an alleged assault in 2023.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the 36-year-old rapper was taken into custody and charged with grievous bodily harm with intent for an incident that reportedly occurred in a central London nightclub two years prior.
In a statement released earlier, authorities confirmed the news, stating: “We have authorised the Metropolitan Police to charge Chris Brown with one count of grievous bodily harm, contrary to section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861,” said Adele Kelly, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS London North, per BBC.
Reports published in The Sun state that the complainant, music producer Abe Diaw, alleges Brown smashed a bottle over his head before continuing to punch and kick him as he lay on the floor. “He his me over the head two or three times. My knee collapsed as well,” the producer told The Sun. The injuries resulted in Diaw being admitted to hospital.
Brown is currently touring in the UK as part of his global Breeze Bowl XX Tour and its currently unknown whether existing dates will be impacted by the latest news.
The singer will remain in custody until his court summons, which is due to take place on Friday, May 16, local time.
Has Chris Brown Been Arrested Before?
Of course, Chris Brown’s latest arrest isn’t the first time he’s had to answer to a police investigation. The rapper was arrested in 2009 for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna at a Grammy’s after-party. He was charged and sentenced to community service and domestic violence counselling.
“It’s in the past, and I don’t want to say, ‘Get over it,’ because it’s a very serious thing that is still relevant. It’s still real,” Rihanna, who recently announced her third pregnancy with partner A$AP Rocky, told Vanity Fair in 2015.
“A lot of women, a lot of young girls, are still going through it. A lot of young boys, too. It’s not a subject to sweep under the rug, so I can’t just dismiss it like it wasn’t anything, or I don’t take it seriously. But, for me, and anyone who’s been a victim of domestic abuse, nobody wants to even remember it.”
Since, the singer has continued to face legal troubles including multiple assault charges, resulting in restraining orders, probation violations, community service and jail-time served.
In 2017, his ex-partner Karrueche Tran was granted a five year restraining order against him, while a 2018 incident saw Brown issued with an additional restraining order for alleged stalking and assault of a woman named Cassandra.
In 2019, Brown was arrested in France on charges of aggravated rape and narcotics offences after a woman filed rape allegations with authorities.
